The “Three Upsetting and Three Drawing” process is a specialized thermomechanical forging technique

 used for titanium alloys (e.g., Ti-6Al-4V) to refine grain structure, improve mechanical properties,

and enhance material uniformity.

2. Key Steps

The process involves three cycles of upsetting (compression) and drawing (elongation) 

under controlled temperatures:

  1. Heating: Heat the billet to 20–50°C below β-transus (e.g., 900–950°C for Ti-6Al-4V).
  2. Upsetting : Axial compression to deform grains laterally.
  3. Drawing : Longitudinal stretching to further refine grains.
  4. Repetition: Perform 3 full cycles to achieve dynamic recrystallization.
