GR5 Titanium Rods Bar Primary Production Processes
Our Rison Titanium GR5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V alloy) rod are manufactured through a series of high-precision metallurgical processes to achieve their exceptional strength,
corrosion resistance, and aerospace-grade quality. Below are the key production stages:
1. Raw Material Preparation
- Sponge Titanium Production (Kroll Process):
- In the Kroll process, workers use magnesium to reduce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄), producing porous titanium sponge.
- The manufacturing process crushes, purifies, and blends the sponge with aluminum-vanadium master alloy (6% Al, 4% V).
- Electrode Compaction:
- The titanium sponge + alloy mixture is pressed into compacted electrodes under vacuum or inert gas.
2. Primary Melting (Vacuum Arc Remelting – VAR)
- First Melt:
- The electrode is melted in a vacuum arc furnace to form a preliminary ingot, removing volatile impurities (such as Mg, Cl).
- Second/Third Melt:
- Repeated VAR melting ensures homogeneous composition and eliminates defects (segregation, porosity and so on).
3. Forging & Hot Working
- Ingot Breakdown:
- The cast ingot is heated to 900–950°C and forged into billets using hydraulic presses or rotary forging.
- Hot Rolling/Extrusion:
- Hot rolling mills process the billets at elevated temperatures to form rods with diameters ranging from 5mm to 200mm.
- Controlled cooling prevents residual stresses.
4. Cold Drawing & Precision Machining
- Cold Drawing:
- Cold drawing equipment pulls the rods through precision dies at room temperature to achieve tight tolerances (e.g., ±0.05mm) and smooth surfaces.
- Annealing:
- Performed at 700–800°C to relieve stresses and restore ductility.
5. Surface Treatment & Finishing
- Pickling:
- Acid bath (HF + HNO₃) removes oxide layers and scale.
- Polishing/Grinding:
- For medical/aerospace applications, rods are mirror-polished to Ra <0.4μm.
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT):
- Detects internal flaws before final certification.
6. Quality Control & Certification
- Chemical Analysis: Ensures composition meets ASTM B348/AMS 4928 (Al: 5.5–6.5%, V: 3.5–4.5%).
- Mechanical Testing: Verifies tensile strength (≥895 MPa), elongation (≥10%), and hardness (HRC 30–36).
- Microstructure Inspection: Confirms equiaxed α+β phase structure for optimal performance.
Key Applications of GR5 Titanium Rods
- Aerospace: Jet engine shafts, landing gear components.
- Medical: Orthopedic implants, surgical instruments.
- Automotive: High-performance connecting rods, valves.
